A Cosenza il Museo all’Aperto Bilotti (MAB) è un gioiello d’arte contemporanea a cielo aperto, rappresenta uno dei più prestigiosi percorsi artistici italiani, un tesoro d’arte contemporanea unico nel suo genere. Nato dalla visione e dalla generosità di Carlo Bilotti, celebre collezionista e mecenate di origini calabresi che ha vissuto a New York da Presidente Pierre Cardin e a Parigi da Presidente Nina Ricci. Il MAB è un regalo straordinario alla città di Cosenza e al suo territorio. Ricordo il giorno della sua inaugurazione. Un evento speciale per tutta la Calabria e per chi ama la cultura, ho pensato ai giovani alla possibilità di studiare le opere da vicino, che meraviglia!!
Un pò di Storia

Inaugurato il 1° settembre 2004 con un protocollo d’intesa tra il Comune e Carlo Bilotti, questo museo senza pareti trasforma il centro urbano di Cosenza in una galleria d’arte permanente lungo Corso Mazzini, oggi completamente pedonalizzato. Il percorso ospita circa 40 sculture di alcuni tra i più grandi artisti del XX secolo, creando un suggestivo dialogo tra arte, architettura e la vita quotidiana.
Un’esperienza artistica – storica esclusiva
Il MAB si distingue per il valore delle sculture contemporanee come il terzo museo italiano godibile all’aperto, dopo il Museo del Palazzo Reale di Milano e il Museo di Firenze. Passeggiare tra queste opere scultoree, immerse nella vita cittadina, è un privilegio raro che trasforma ogni visita in un viaggio nella bellezza e nella creatività. È un luogo dove l’arte respira insieme al territorio, rendendo l’esperienza dei visitatori non solo estetica, ma anche profondamente emozionale. Come ogni anno per i giorni della MEMORIA, in Italia si ricorda il 27 gennaio, desideriamo far onoscere al pubblico di tutto il mondo la testimonianza di Giulia Mafai nota costumista e scenografa italiana scomparsa nel 2021, figlia di due grandi artisti Mario Mafai e Antonietta Raphel, per conoscere e apprezzare l’opera “Le tre sorelle” esposta alla Biennale di Venezia 1948, quest’opera raffigura le figlie di Mafai inclusa Giulia che parla in un campo di concentramento, questa opera l’abbiamo donata a Cosenza sia per il campo di Ferramonti che per il Cafarone, ghetto di Cosenza; da questa scultura affermava Giulia Mafai è stato tratto un bronzo che abbiamo dato al museo ebraico di Roma. Altra opera straordinaria per bellezza e significato è la “Maternità”, la madre protegge la figlia come se volesse rimetterla nel grembo materno per farle da scudo con il proprio corpo, invece l’opera “Toro Morente” interpreta gli ebrei uccisi in campo di concentramento. Inseriamo in questa pubblicazione la testimonianza di Giulia Mafai, una delle tre sorelle scampate al campo di concentramento.
Un progetto di coesione sociale e innovazione culturale
Il MAB è stato definito dal Presidente Unesco Gianni Puglisi come “un patrimonio culturale d’interesse pubblico avente valore di civiltà”, e nel 2019, con Decreto del Ministero per i Beni Culturali, è stato riconosciuto di interesse particolarmente importante, per il suo carattere artistico e il valore identitario che esprime.
Le sculture esposte raccontano la straordinaria vitalità artistica del Novecento: dai futurismi di Giacomo Balla, ai richiami classici di Giorgio de Chirico, dal surrealismo di Salvador Dalì al rigore astratto di Pietro Consagra. Ogni opera testimonia la creatività, le tensioni e i sogni del “secolo breve”, un periodo che ha visto drammi profondi e altrettanti slanci di rinascita.
In Cosenza, the Bilotti Open-Air Museum (MAB) is an open-air contemporary art jewel, representing one of the most prestigious Italian artistic paths, a unique contemporary art treasure. Born from the vision and generosity of Carlo Bilotti, a famous collector and patron of Calabrian origins who lived in New York as President Pierre Cardin and in Paris as President Nina Ricci. The MAB is an extraordinary gift to the city of Cosenza and its territory. I remember the day of its inauguration. A special event for all of Calabria and for those who love culture, I thought of the young people at the possibility of studying the works up close, how wonderful!!

Inaugurated on September 1, 2004 with a memorandum of understanding between the Municipality and Carlo Bilotti, this museum without walls transforms the urban center of Cosenza into a permanent art gallery along Corso Mazzini, today completely pedestrianized. The route hosts about 40 sculptures by some of the greatest artists of the 20th century, creating a suggestive dialogue between art, architecture and everyday life.
An exclusive artistic – historical experience
The MAB stands out for the value of contemporary sculptures as the third Italian museum that can be enjoyed outdoors, after the Museum of the Royal Palace in Milan and the Museum of Florence. Walking among these sculptural works, immersed in city life, is a rare privilege that transforms every visit into a journey into beauty and creativity. It is a place where art breathes together with the territory, making the visitor experience not only aesthetic, but also deeply emotional. As every year for the days of REMEMBRANCE, in Italy we remember January 27, we want to make known to the public around the world the testimony of Giulia Mafai, a well-known Italian costume designer and set designer who passed away in 2021, daughter of two great artists Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphel, to know and appreciate the work “The three sisters” exhibited at the Venice Biennale 1948, this work depicts Mafai’s daughters including Giulia who speaks in the concentration camp, we donated this work to Cosenza both for the Ferramonti camp and for the Cafarone, ghetto of Cosenza; from this sculpture Giulia Mafai stated a bronze was made that we gave to the Jewish museum in Rome. Another extraordinary work for beauty and meaning is “Maternity”, the mother protects her daughter as if she wanted to put her back in the mother’s womb to shield her with her own body, instead the work “Dying Bull” interprets the Jews killed in the concentration camp. We include in this publication the testimony of Giulia Mafai, one of the three sisters who escaped the concentration camp.
A project of social cohesion and cultural innovation
The MAB was defined by UNESCO President Gianni Puglisi as “a cultural heritage of public interest with a value of civilization”, and in 2019, with a Decree of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, it was recognized as being of particularly important interest, for its artistic character and the identity value it expresses.
The sculptures on display tell the extraordinary artistic vitality of the twentieth century: from the futurism of Giacomo Balla, to the classical references of Giorgio de Chirico, from the surrealism of Salvador Dalì to the abstract rigor of Pietro Consagra. Each work bears witness to the creativity, tensions and dreams of the “short century”, a period that saw profound dramas and just as many impulses of rebirth.
